Message from Dean of Academics

Dear Students,

On behalf of Somaiya Vidyavihar University (SVU) I congratulate you and extend a warm welcome to you in the Somaiya family which started the service to education in 1942. In these eight decades the focus of education has been “Knowledge alone liberates”.

Students in SVU are blessed to have Hon. Shri Samir Somaiya as the Hon. Chancellor who is highly educated and has education from Cornell and Harvard Universities. Hon. Shri Samir Somaiya is also the Chairman and managing director of Godavari Biorefineries ltd. The academic council has external members from different parts of the world which is very rare. Prof. V. N. Rajasekharan Pillai former Chairman UGC and renowned Polymer Scientist is the Hon. Vice Chancellor of the University. The deans and faculty members are full of zeal towards the purpose of education.

Somaiya Vidyavihar University has Nine faculty of study which gives the student enough freedom to choose the field of education. There is also an option for students to have a major in the field of choice and learn other courses from the different faculty of study on campus.

Students will learn the courses as interdisciplinary courses in music, dance, theatre, dharma studies, nature, modern Indian languages, classical Indian languages and international languages, fine arts, literature and sports.

The journey of students in the University is not only rewarding in learning but also fulfilling and filled with joy, The students of SVU say every day that I want to go to SVU rather than I have to go to SVU.

The value-based education is the foundation which is responsible for the success of the alumni of the legacy colleges of Somaiya Vidyavihar campus.

I recollect the words of Nelson Mandela “Collapsing any Nation does not require use of Atomic bombs or the use of Long range missiles. But it requires lowering the quality of Education and allowing cheating in the exams by the students.”

I will conclude with the words of John Stuart Mill said in 1867 “Universities are not intended to teach the knowledge required to fit men for some special mode of making their livelihood. Their objective is not to make skillful lawyers, or physicians, or engineers, but capable and cultivated human beings…”

Best wishes,

Prof. S. K. Narayankhedkar
