Jalgaon is a major trade and commercial center in India, with an average highway vehicular density of 17,000 vehicles/day. This paper examines the ambient air environment and its effect on shopkeepers working on both sides of a busy highway passing through the heart of Jalgaon. Findings showed that the shopkeepers working near the highway are at high risk of exposure to air pollution caused by heavy highway traffic. The lung function test of the shopkeepers showed a significant decrease in forced vital capacity, forced expiratory volume in one second and peak expiratory flow rate. Regular periodic health checkups, increased awareness of the health impacts of pollution, and use of a nose mask are recommended to help protect these shopkeepers.
